Reality::..Friends – season 1, based after The Pilot but before anything major happens
Rated::..PG for adult themes
Genre::..Romance, humour & drama
Characters::..Phoebe, Joey, Rachel, Monica, Ross, Chandler & Kip.
Pairing::..Phoebe/Joey – or Joebe, if you will
Author’s Note::..So seeing is how Phoebe & Joey never hooked up in the show I had to write it for myself. I figure that the way those two act around each other, something like this could have believably been written into the show. I tried to stay as true to the show as I could & capture the characters personalities as best as I could.
I’ve pretty much just ignored the outline of The One with the Flashback because number 1: Phoebe & Joey don’t hook up in that (unfortunately) & number 2: Kip isn’t still going out with Monica then. I just wanted to add in someone for Monica & I love the episode The One with All the Kips so I felt that maybe Kip deserved a moment in the sun.
This chapter carries straight on from the last chapter. & in this chapter Chandler finally steps in. I will admit that I was really worried about writing him, just because I love him very much & I was worried that I wouldn't be able to write him properly. I think I carried it off well, I hope you guys do too
Summary::..Rachel wants to hear the story of Phoebe & Joey’s relationship.
They were a block or so away from their building when they slowed down to a walk. They were both panting heavily & had a sleet of sweat over them when they stopped.
“Do you think we lost them?” Joey asked looking back over his shoulder.
Phoebe paused furrowing her brow. “They were following us?”
“That’s why we were running.” He shrugged.
“Oh, I only kept running because you did.” She told him.
“Now I really don’t have any energy to bug you about sex.” He said.
She sighed happily taking his hand. “That was the best date ever.”
“I know, it was so much fun.” He agreed. “You know I doubt that anyone else would classify that as a date.”
“But dates should be fun like that.” She said.
He paused. “Yeah but they shouldn’t include running.”
“Oh no, that wasn’t much fun.” She stated. “I think that we should probably take a rest at the coffee house before we go up to your place.”
“Oh definitely.” He agreed.
They went into the coffee house where Chandler & Kip were sitting on the couch together. They went in with Joey collapsing into the lounge chair & Phoebe falling into his lap.
“Okay we don’t want to hear about how great the sex you just had was.” Kip said bitterly.
Phoebe & Joey both paused turning to each other with confused expressions.
“Did we have sex?” He asked her quietly. “I don’t remember if we did.”
She shrugged a shoulder. “I don’t think so.” She turned back to Chandler & Kip. “So uh…huh?”
“You guys had sex, right?” Chandler asked.
“No.” Joey replied.
“What makes you think that?” Phoebe said.
Chandler shrugged. “Well you’re both sweaty & out of breath.” They both laughed turning to each other, pointing & laughing. “What’s so funny?”
“We weren’t having sex.” Joey stated.
“No, we were just running.” Phoebe said.
Chandler raised his eyebrows & turned to Kip. “Of course, because it’s the perfect night for that.”
“So what’s with the penguin?” Kip asked.
“Oh, Joey won it for me.” Phoebe said smiling proudly to him.
Chandler nodded. “So you had fun at the carnival?”
“Oh yeah, you should’ve seen Phoebe getting our penguin back from this mean kid.” Joey said.
Both Kip & Chandler paused looking at them with no idea what to say.
“There was mean kid there?” Chandler asked.
“Yep & Phoebe taught her a lesson.” Joey replied proudly.
Kip furrowed his brow. “A little kid?”
“Yeah & she was really mean.” Phoebe stated.
“How little are we talking? 6, 2?” Chandler asked.
“You weren’t there!” Joey defended. “Come on Pheebs; let’s go find a spot for our victory penguin.”
“Yeah.” Phoebe agreed glaring back at Chandler & Kip. “Maybe we’ll have sex too.”
Both Chandler & Kip cursed muttering under their breath.
“Those lucky horny bastards.” Kip spat.
Joey grinned to Phoebe as they went upstairs. “Are we really gonna have sex?”
“No sweetie, we’ve still got three more days until Halloween.” She told him with a cruel smile.
“So what are we gonna call our little love penguin?” Phoebe asked as Joey checked the answering machine.
“It’s a love penguin now? I thought it was a victory penguin.” Joey said going into the lounge room.
She shrugged a shoulder. “Does it really matter?”
He laid down on the couch beside where she was sitting. “I guess not, I mean it’s your penguin, you can call it whatever you want.”
She smiled running a hand through his floppy hair before she placed her hand to his chin & lightly tilted his head up. “Whatever I want?”
He nodded. “Whatever you want.”
She hugged the penguin to her chest. “Hugsy.”
He laughed lightly sitting up. “Uh Pheebs I don’t think you understood what I meant by ‘whatever you want’.”
She nodded knowingly. “Uh-huh.”
“See what I meant was: you can call it whatever you want but I have to approve of what you call it.” He told her.
“Yeah well I didn’t know that when I picked the name so I think I’m gonna stick with Hugsy.” She said.
“Really?” He groaned.
“Yes.” She replied.
“But I won it; shouldn’t I get to name it?” He complained.
She folded her arms over her chest. “What do you want to name it then?”
He shrugged. “I dunno something manlier.”
“Like Butch.” She suggested. “Or Spike or Warrior King.”
“I was kidding.” She told him. “Come on, we’re gonna call him Hugsy.”
He groaned. “Why?”
“Because after I got it back from that little twerp it was kind of like I won him, so now I can give him away if I want to. & I’m gonna give him to you.” She explained placing the penguin in his lap. “& when you see him you’ll think of hugging me, which I know you love.”
He smiled. “Aww, that’s so nice. Now I like Hugsy.”
She grinned proudly. “That’s right, Phoebe wins again.”
“That was so great; I had so much fun with you tonight.” He told her.
“Me too.” She smiled.
He scooted closer to her. “So did I improve your day?”
“Of course.” She said. “You made me feel so happy; no one has ever taken me on such a fun date.”
“I’m glad, you looked so sad before.” He told her leaning in & kissing her.
After their lips separated he lingered for a few moments making her sigh heavily her eyes fluttering shut.
“I love you.” She whispered before she could think.
As soon as she’d realized what she had said she instantly paused. She felt her whole body freeze with fear.
Joey had told her the majority of his stories & she knew that he was a ladies man. He wasn’t the kind of guy that settled down & got into serious relationships quickly. He had told her that he had never been in love before. He was the kind of guy that liked to have a bit of fun & she had just ruined the best relationship she’d had in a long time.
It was pretty much the best relationship she’d had. She had fun with him & she loved hanging out with him.
When she thought about it she really did love him. He was sweet, he was fun, he was sexy & he just seemed to click perfectly with her – she thought so at least.
He paused furrowing his brow. “Huh?”
“I-I said nothing.” She lied.
He pulled back. “I heard you say something, come on, tell me.”
“No, it’s nothing I’m just muttering, it’s not important.” She said scooting a little away from him & getting up. “So let’s find a spot Hugsy, where are we going to put him?”
He got up quickly after her. “What’s going on? I thought we were having a moment.”
“Well now we’re having a Hugsy moment.” She stated.
He paused cupping his chin with his hand. “I think I heard you say that you love me.”
“Alright, enough of the third degree! I’ll admit it; I said that I love you. But it doesn’t matter because you don’t feel the same way so we’ll just forget that I ever said it.” She babbled.
He looked at her seeming confused but also concerned. “Pheebs, what are you talking about?”
She paused from putting a lock of hair into her mouth. “I…um…I don’t know.” She took a step back from him.
“I’m crazy about you.” He told her. “I’ve never really been in love before but I’m guessing that this is what it feels like.”
Her jaw dropped open a few inches as she stumbled for words. “I-I…w-what? You love me?”
“Yeah, I think I do.” He told her.
She laughed incredulously. “Oh my God. I was really worried that you wouldn’t feel the same so I thought of not telling you.”
“That’s dumb.” He said.
She shrugged a shoulder. “I just didn’t want to ruin this great thing that we have by moving too quickly.”
“I don’t think that you could ruin it even if you tried.” He told her.
She smiled. “I’m gonna have to kiss you now.”
“Go for it.” He encouraged.
She leant in pausing only seconds from his lips. “& maybe after I kiss you we could go have sex.”
“I thought we were taking that break until Halloween.” He said. “Not that I’m stopping you, if you really want to you can.”
“Eh, this is a special occasion screw Halloween.” She stated taking his hand & leading him into the bedroom.
“Yeah.” He agreed. “I never liked Halloween anyway.”
“They were so cute after that.” Monica stated with a laugh.
“The only reason why you’re so giddy over it is because Phoebe couldn’t prove you wrong.” Ross told her.
“It’s Joey, as if I would’ve lasted a whole week without tearing his clothes off with my teeth.” Phoebe said.
Monica furrowed her brow at Phoebe. “Then why did you tell me that you could?”
“Because I just wanted to annoy you.” Phoebe shrugged.
Rachel wasn’t paying much attention to their chattering, she was still lost in the story. “You guys were in love? That’s so sweet.”
“In love is an understatement, they were crazy about each other.” Ross said before Phoebe could reply.
Phoebe scoffed. “Come on, we weren’t that crazy, were we?”
“Uh, yeah.” Both Ross & Monica replied at the same time.
“Really?” Phoebe asked. “I didn’t really think that you guys noticed it that much.”
Ross laughed sarcastically. “It was kind of hard to miss.”
“Yeah.” Monica agreed.
“Really?” Phoebe repeated.
Ross leant back entwining his fingers & cracking them loudly. “I think it’s time for Ross to tell a little story.”
Ross hadn’t known Joey for very long, maybe a few months or so.
The whole time Ross had known Joey he’d been dating Phoebe & all along it was obvious that Joey & Phoebe really liked each other. But the whole time Ross had never seen them so in love.
He had though that they were simply lovers just having a bit of fun together. But the way they were now really made Ross think differently, they seemed way more into each other than he had first thought.
Ross & Chandler were sitting at the bench with the pizzas they had just ordered waiting for Joey to finish saying goodbye to Phoebe. They’d been standing at the door kissing for the past four minutes or so. Phoebe had been leaving for work but she didn’t seem to be getting past the door when Joey was blocking it with his lips.
Chandler was sighing & rolling his eyes clearly annoyed but Ross thought it was kind of cute. At least they weren’t hiding their relationship anymore.
“I’m super late for work now.” Phoebe told Joey.
“Okay.” He shrugged before leaning in to kiss her again.
They kissed for a few more moments until Phoebe pulled back again.
“I really have to go.” She stated.
“Okay.” He repeated leaning in to kiss her.
She avoided his lips by leaning back away from him. “No, I really need to go.” He groaned causing her to laugh. “You can walk me outside if you want to.”
“I don’t think I should do that.” He told her hesitantly.
“Because then I’ll wanna kiss you more & you’ll never get to work.” He stated.
She giggled before she leant in & kissed him softly. “Aww, you’re so cute.”
“I know.” He shrugged. “So I’ll see you tonight?”
“Of course.” She replied. “Bye sweetie.” She kissed him once more before looking over his shoulder so she could see the others. “Bye you guys.”
“Bye.” Chandler & Ross chimed at the same time as Phoebe squeezed Joey’s butt & then left.
Joey smiled leaning out the door to watch Phoebe leave. Once Phoebe had disappeared down the stairs Joey stepped back into the apartment & closed the door. “Did you guys just see that? That was Phoebe.”
“Yeah, we saw her Joe.” Chandler said. “Just like we saw her for the past three years.”
“We got pizza here.” Ross pointed.
Joey made his way over to the bench smiling dreamily. “But you saw Phoebe, right?”
Ross furrowed his brow at Joey. “Yeah.”
Joey sighed heavily. “Ahh, Phoebe’s so great.”
“He’s ignoring the pizza.” Ross told Chandler.
“I know, I see it too.” Chandler stated.
“This must be serious.” Ross said.
Chandler shrugged. “Just give it a minute.”
Joey’s face suddenly lit up into a smile. “Hey, pizza!”
“There it is.” Chandler stated.
“So things between you & Phoebe seem to be going well.” Ross said.
“Forget about it.” Joey replied around a mouthful of pizza. “It’s amazing, last night Phoebe told me that she loves me.”
“Wow, so things are pretty serious between you guys, huh?” Ross asked.
Joey nodded. “You betcha, Phoebe’s the greatest, she’s fun, she’s sexy & she’s tough. She makes me sandwiches & helps me learn lines, she is the coolest girlfriend ever.”
“You love her, huh?” Chandler asked.
“I’m crazy about her, didn’t you just hear me say that she’s the greatest?” Joey replied.
“Lucky bastard.” Chandler muttered.
“Hey, did you hear what happened with Monica & Kip?” Ross began.
Both Chandler & Joey shrugged. “No.”
“They broke up.” Ross said.
Joey sighed shaking his head. “That poor bastard.”
Phoebe arrived home to find Monica sitting at the dining table smiling like a Cheshire cat. Phoebe jumped back clutching her heart as she panted heavily – she hadn’t expected to come home to this. “Oh my God, you should have a sign on the door warning people about you sitting in here. That is frightening!”
Monica ignored her. “Guess who’s been talking about you non-stop all day?”
“Ross!” She answered instantly but then she paused thinking over her answer. “Chandler.”
“No.” Monica said with a roll of her eyes. “Joey.”
Phoebe smiled bashfully feeling her heart flutter. “Aww, what’s he been doin’ talking about me all day?”
“Well first of all he told me that you guys had sex last night.” Monica stated.
“Really? Dammit he is such a sucky liar.” Phoebe cursed.
“He also told me what you guys talked about before you proved me right.” Monica continued.
Phoebe looked at her in disgust. “Oh God, why didn’t you just get him to draw you a diagram of us ‘proving you right’.”
“No sweetie that’s not what I mean.” Monica assured her. “He told me that you guys said that you love each other.”
“Oh that, well that’s okay then.” She shrugged.
Monica looked at her carefully. “You realize that it’s a huge step, don’t you?”
“It’s not that big of a step is it?” Phoebe asked.
“Oh it’s huge.” Monica replied seriously. “You guys have just admitted that you’re on the same emotional level about each other. You have a great connection now & don’t even get me started on how rare it is to get on the same emotional level with a guy.”
Phoebe paused. “You watch too many romantic movies.”
“But don’t you agree that this is huge?” Monica asked.
“Not really.” Phoebe replied. “We’re on the same level so we admitted our feelings, it’s kind of like if we were both hungry & we told each other.”
Monica gawked at her. “It’s nothing like being hungry!”
Phoebe jumped back. “I’m sorry?”
Monica sighed getting her anger in check. “You should just realize that he seems really serious about you, he talked about you for hours.”
“Really?” Phoebe asked. “That’s so cute. I didn’t really expect Joey to be like this, I’ve been with guys like him before & they’ve never made me feel this safe. Like it’s exciting but I can trust it at the same time.”
“Aww that’s so romantic. You should’ve heard Joey talking about how great he thinks you are, all day he was saying how sexy & fun he thinks you are.” Monica told her. “He really thinks that you’re amazing.”
Phoebe shrugged a shoulder blushing. “Well, I can’t say that I blame him. So he’s really interested, huh?”
“Oh totally.” Monica replied.
“Wow, I was worried that I might come on too strongly but this is great.” Phoebe said.
“I’m so happy for you sweetie.” Monica told her.
Phoebe smiled laughing lightly. “I’m really happy for me too. I’m also really glad because he’s so much fun…& he’s so hot.”
“Hello children.” Chandler greeted them as he entered the apartment.
“Quick Chandler, you’re missing the story!” Ross said hailing him over to sit at the table with them.
Chandler furrowed his brow glancing at Monica who was standing at the bench preparing snacks for them. “What story is this? The story of the sugar plum fairies?”
“What? No.” Ross snapped screwing his face up in confusion. “Phoebe’s telling us stories about her & Joey.”
Chandler sat down in Monica’s empty seat. “Oh yeah? You know Pheebs if you’ve forgotten anything I’m sure I could fill it in for you. Seeing is how I lived with Joey at the time & whenever he wasn’t talking about you, you were actually there in person.”
“Yeah, there you go Rachel; you can ask Chandler some questions.” Phoebe said.
“You didn’t know about this?” Chandler asked her.
Rachel shrugged. “How could I know about it? I didn’t even know you guys.”
“You just come into my apartment at 12 o’clock at night & you’ll hear all about it.” Chandler told her.
Rachel paused for a few moments before she shrugged shaking her head. “I…uh…I don’t get it. Why would I have to wait until then? Wouldn’t Joey be asleep then?”
“Yeah, that’s the whole point.” Chandler told her. “Joey talks about it in his sleep all the time.”
“Really?” Phoebe asked her mouth dropping open. “Joey talks about me in his sleep.”
“That’s not all he does in his sleep.” Chandler stated. “Believe me.”
Rachel had turned to Phoebe. “Did you hear that sweetie?”
“Yeah.” Phoebe replied smiling shyly. “I can’t say I’m really surprised.”
“You guys were really in love, huh?” Rachel asked.
“Yeah, I loved him heaps, I still do but in a different way.” Phoebe told her.
Chandler furrowed his brow at her. “What are you talking about?”
“Well when we were together I loved him as a boyfriend but now I love him just as a friend.” She stated.
“You guys were like best friends even when you were dating.” He said. “It was tooth-rottingly sweet how great you guys were together. You didn’t need to have sex or have important talks to have a perfect relationship, you were best friends & it worked, you lucky bastards.”
Phoebe shrugged a shoulder. “But that was kind of the reason as to why we broke up.”
Rachel gasped clasping her hands over her mouth. “You broke up?” One hand went to her forehead. “Oh my God, that’s so sad.”
Monica furrowed her brow leaning down so as she was at Rachel’s level. “You’re aware that Joey & Phoebe aren’t together anymore, right?”
Rachel waved her arms shooing Monica frantically. “Shh, Phoebe’s gonna tell a new story!”
Phoebe was beginning to get a little worried. She & Joey had been dating for 10 months now & over the past six weeks or so they hadn’t been spending as much time fooling around together, they’d been spending more time hanging out just like friends.
It didn’t really seem like they were a couple anymore. They seemed more like friends with benefits.
But the benefits were beginning to get less & less. Slowly their sex life had disintegrated. It seemed that they didn’t need to have sex to enjoy being with each other anymore.
She was really worried. This was the best relationship she’d ever been in. She was absolutely crazy about Joey, he understood her on a level that no one had.
Their relationship was working so perfectly. They were both on the same level, they worked perfectly together.
But the passion had begun to fizzle out.
She still loved him like crazy but her attraction to him was beginning to seem less sexual.
They had squeezed so much into such a short time. They’d been dating for 10 months & so much had happened. They loved each other, they could also be friends, they’d met everyone that there was to meet in each other’s lives & they knew everything about each other.
Maybe they’d done everything there was to do without them stepping into anything like having kids or getting married, which she certainly didn’t want to do. She felt too young to have kids & she couldn’t imagine she & Joey as parents. There was also the fact that she was technically still married.
Stretching it out felt as if they were killing the perfect relationship. The relationship seemed to be dead but she didn’t want to admit it. She didn’t want to hurt Joey, she loved him too much & she didn’t know what she’d do with herself if they did break up.
They were in Joey’s room getting ready for bed & she figured that she should float the idea of sex. They hadn’t had sex in a while & it was truly bugging her.
“You wanna have sex?” She offered.
He paused shrugging. “Nah, I’m kind of tired.”
She let out a sigh of relief. “Oh okay, cool. I wasn’t really in the mood to have sex anyway.”
He nodded lying down on the bed. “We are so in-tune with each other.”
She smiled nodding. “Totally.”
“I can still snuggle you real good.” He offered holding his arms out to her.
“Great.” She grinned lying down facing him.
He turned the light off before he put his arms around her, kissing her lightly on the temple. “Goodnight Pheebs.”
She held her arms around him tightly fighting back tears. This was too nice; she didn’t want to lose it. But the relationship wasn’t going anywhere but backwards, what could she do?
“I love you so much.” She told him her voice cracking a little.
He rubbed her back. “I love you too babe.”
“You need to hold me extra tight tonight.” She told him.
“Oh right, you got it.” He said.
She paused as he held tighter. “Uh-huh, because by that I meant ‘hold my ass tighter’.”
“I told you, we’re in-tune.” He replied not getting her sarcasm.
